Who Should Use a Stair Lift?

Posted on: September 17, 2011

Stair lifts are well-known as a great mobility aid because of their function. Seniors and the disabled just need to sit on these chairs which are attached with a metal track that runs along the staircase. The metal tracks are bolted to the steps and they are present all along the length of the staircase. When started the stair lift moves along this track. At a time one occupant can move upward or downwards the stairs very safely. The main concern that we have for our seniors and elderly people at home is stairs. To make them a safe place in a cost effective way we can take the assistance of a modern technology known as stair lifts. Staircases are a dangerous thing for elderly people.

The stair lifts have a geared drive. These run on electrical motor. The electrical motor moves the chair. The stair lift can be powered by the house electrical power or they might even be running on batteries properly charged. Battery powered stair lifts is mostly very popular as these can be used even when the power at home is lost. Hence people will not get stuck when power is out.

For people of old age and seniors the stair lifts are a boon. A standing stair lift is also found in the market for people who have a knee pain or have gone through a hip or knee replacement surgery. The standing stair lifts are also known as perch lifts. In this kind of lifts a person simply stands on it as the whole stair lift moves upwards through the stairs. There are stair lifts found which provides a waist high support so people can lean on it. Hence these are extremely beneficial for people who have undergone some kind of surgery.

However, these kinds of stair lifts must be used only when recommended medically. Since they require a great sense of balance of the person using it proper care is necessary. A person with short visibility must not use this. They take up less space than stair lifts. Hence for staircases that are narrow stair lifts are not very suitable.

A normal stair lift does not work for a person using a wheelchair or a mobility scooter. Hence they require a platform lift. These are mostly similar like a stair lift but the only difference is that they use a large platform. Over here the wheelchair can be driven into and it also provides a fold out bench. These also need a lot of space and hence not suitable for many houses.

Standing stair lifts are also found which are often called as Incline Platform lifts or Inclined Platform lifts. These provide a bigger platform as compared to regular stair lifts. These are then carried up or down with the user on it. People with a medical condition that limits him to sit can use such a stair lift mostly. For a wide number of reasons stair lifts have become really popular in the world. The primary reason behind the success of stair lifts is its cost. Stair lifts are comparatively lower in cost in safety solutions. The price and rate mostly varies depending on the model and features the user chooses.
